A chasm of pain ripped open inside him as the panel confirmed his fears. The scene blurred around him as tears filled his eyes and his throat tightened. His fingers jabbed frantically at the lighted buttons, clawing at the joints in the case in a futile attempt to get her out.
Then, a beep sounded, and the case opened with a hiss. Nathan leaned in and wrapped his arms around his sister. She was cold. Too cold. He listened for her heart, for her breath, for anything. But there was nothing.
Overloaded with pain, tears filled his eyes as he clutched her dead body.
âSusan. No⦠No!â
Memories of their childhood flooded backâhow she cared for him when he was sick. A game of hide and seek. Staying up late together to watch superhero movies.
Whispers rose from the fog, jolting him from his trance. It was a low voice, too low to make out.
Nathan carefully put Susan down and closed the case. He would come back for her.
Two taps to his left ear, and the translator switched off instantly. A series of clicks whispered through the mist, just like they had during his abduction, destroying any doubt in his mindâit was the unmistakable sounds of the Vox.
Pain turned to anger and anger to rage.
Hunting the voices, he ran into a cloud of mist. It clung to his face, pulling across it like a spider web. As it passed, it revealed the dark silhouette of the whispering Vox.
Nathan froze. The mist was just thick enough to hide him, he hoped. Agonizing memories of his abduction rushed him again, but this time he successfully fought them back as he watched the creature, hoping to understand it betterâto find its weaknesses.
Removed from its suit, it looked completely different. It was about five feet tall, black and round, with several webbed tentacles. It was octopus-like in nature, but with a thick spine that allowed it to stand erect on four of its tentacles. The head, however, was flat, wide, and ridged like a dragonâs might be, with six yellow eyes per side, making it look like a sort of mystical samurai demon helmet. Four horns extended backward for at least a foot and covered with spines.
Two diamond shaped displays hovered in the air before it, each showing a different image. It seemed to be communicating with them. The left screen held the image of another Vox that looked more like the one Nathan had encountered on Earth. The right screen showed a humanoid wearing a Meraki military uniform.
It was Valor Krell Duma.
The truth tore through Nathanâs world like an unstoppable force of nature. The Vox was not a prisonerâit was working with the Meraki.
Without thinking, Nathan snatched the knife from his boot and charged the creature. Instinct took over as he readied himself for combat.
The Vox spun almost instantly. It rose up to confront him, reaching a towering height. Its leg-like tentacles slammed to the floor with heavy, hoof like feet, and its body morphed from a rounded, fluid form into something more combat ready, covered with spikey protrusions.
